REVIEW: Marilyn by Marilyn Hucek

Saturday, 1 November 2025

With her self-titled debut, MARILYN, indie-pop singer-songwriter Marilyn Hucek steps fully into her power—crafting a coming-of-age narrative that’s both deeply personal and universally resonant. Written between Nashville and Los Angeles, the album is an unfiltered diary of womanhood, identity, and the quiet strength that comes from self-discovery.

MARILYN is a ‘me’ project,” Hucek says, and that honesty radiates through every track. The record opens with “I Made It,” a breezy, open-road anthem that sets the tone for a journey of independence and hope. It’s the sound of an artist claiming her space, blending shimmering guitars and crisp pop production with the storytelling sensibility of a Nashville troubadour.

From there, Hucek delves into more intimate terrain. “Naked” is an aching reflection on vulnerability and distance, while “Love to Hate You” exposes jealousy and obsession with striking candor. On “Pressure Makes Diamonds” and “To Be or Not To Be,” she confronts societal expectations—marriage, motherhood, and the myth of having it all—with refreshing clarity and courage.

Moments of levity and playfulness balance the emotional weight. “Rebound” is a wink of self-awareness dressed in glossy pop production, while “Me Salvaste el Alma,” a Spanish-language love song inspired by her Chilean heritage, showcases Hucek’s bilingual artistry and cross-cultural perspective.

The album’s emotional center, “Neil Young,” is both elegy and love letter to her late father, who battled Alzheimer’s disease. It’s a stunning closer—understated yet devastating in its sincerity. Notably, Hucek is donating 5% of the single’s streaming royalties to the Alzheimer’s Association, underscoring how her art and activism are deeply intertwined.

Produced by Hana Elion, Daniel Tayra, Philip Silverberg, and Rachel Caridi, MARILYN finds the perfect balance between organic instrumentation and polished pop sheen. Hucek’s vocals—haunting, delicate, and resolute—anchor the album’s emotional core. Each song feels lived-in, like an intimate confession whispered late at night.

For fans of Kacey Musgraves, HAIM, Billie Eilish, and Taylor Swift, MARILYN offers both sonic familiarity and emotional freshness. It’s not just a debut—it’s a declaration. Marilyn Hucek has arrived as a voice of her generation: honest, self-aware, and unafraid to be vulnerable.

Verdict: ★★★★☆ – A raw, radiant, and empowering debut that cements Marilyn Hucek as one of indie pop’s most promising new storytellers.
