Pink Headaches is the name of Ernie's debut single, released on June 7th, just mere days before it was to be played in front of an anticaapting crowd at St. James Park prior to Sam Fender's headline performance. Ernie has personally described this song as 'the scenes of my childhood and the complex mix of feelings that come in tow' and I think this is a perfect synopsis for this beautiful debut single.
Upon hitting play, you are immediately immersed by a rich guitar tone that somehow manages to remind you of a warm summer's day; everything feels bright, uplifted and joyful in direct comparison to the lyrics. The flawless harmonies of vocals come into the track paired with what seems to sound like a glockenspiel to further fit that childish, playful vibe.
The lyriccs in this song can be related to by almost anyone; talking about tales of waking up hungover just to go out with friends and be served tasteless food to perk yourself up to missing a single trick and ending up hanging out with the wrong crowd. Childhood isn't the idealistic perfect experience we all wish for it to be what everyone makes it out to be and this song captures the trial and tribulations of being a young person with ease, creating an almost idyllic contrast with that bright guitar tone and near heavenly harmonies.
The title of this single is mentioned through the two concluding lyrics; "Pink headaches falling through the clouds", "Pink headaches glazing over everything". These lines follow on from stories of times where life didn't seem to be what everyone makes it out to be, a rough patch and seems to lead onto a realisation that this is what life is made up of.
"And I still feel like a stranger in this town I don't let it get me down but I still feel like I'm living a dream, dreaming isn't all it seems to be". Ernie talks of still feeling like a stranger in his hometown, in this chorus, yet living there all his life, feeling like he's living in a dream but not allowing those present feelings and especially those in the past to get in his way and disrupt the very obvious progression that he'll take through life.
Lyrically, this song encapsulates the feeling of a shattered idealisation of growing u perfectly whilst pairing that with the hopeful and joyous sounding harmonies and guitar, I think it's pretty clear that Ernie has a promising career ahead of him.
