5 Questions with Alation

Saturday, 4 July 2026

A few weeks ago we sat down with Alation to discuss what got the band into music and what they hope for the rest of 2026 to happen...

1. What made you want to get into music?
What got us all into music was definitely early exposure from family members. When Ethan and I were kids, I remember being at Christmas parties and seeing my Grandad's CD player and all the CDs and hearing things like The Beatles and Fleetwood Mac. There’s also the story of how Ethan got into Elvis Presley relatively young as well. We used to go to our nana and Granda's house and Ethan would listen to the Elvis gold greatest hits CD through one of those old school CD players with the headphone jack in. We would've been like around 6. But we weren’t musically talented or inclined at that age. As for actually playing guitar, I would've been 14, and was massively into nirvana and Kurt Cobain. That's what got me into playing guitar. What got me into writing songs was Oasis and Noel Gallagher. Ethan originally was a drummer and then when I was watching MTV rocks one day (which doesn't exist any more), Oasis appeared on TV. It was the song Supersonic, and we instantly just looked at each other and went that is it. As soon as Ethan heard and saw Liam, he wanted to be a singer and the next day, we got our hair cut shorter, and we stopped listening to strictly nirvana and other grungy stuff. I got stuck into all sorts; sex pistols, the jam, all sorts. We just properly delved into the influences of oasis and just immersed in it.

2. What are your plans for 2026?
Well, we’ve been recording and writing new songs. Aiming for a release very soon, nothing is confirmed yet, but hopefully there will be a couple of releases very soon for everyone to get stuck into. Got a few exciting gigs in the pipeline too, supporting our mates TENT next month at The Globe in Newcastle. Other gigs will be announced soon, so stay tuned.

3.  What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Sounds silly, but just actually getting out there and releasing music and gigging is a huge highlight. Getting acknowledged and people coming up to you after a gig saying that it was a great gig, or they liked the new song or whatever is what keeps us going. We have played outside the North East as well, so suppose that's a highlight. We've played at The Water Rats in Kings Cross, London. That was our first gig outside the North East, and it was our first London gig. It was also Oasis's first London gig, so that was special. We've also played Edinburgh twice at Sneaky Pete's. We had a headline there last summer and it was a class night.

4. Who are your inspirations music wise?
Our main inspirations are varied depending on who you talk to, but for the band, it’s Oasis, The Stone Roses, Sex Pistols, The Kinks and The Beatles.

5. Tell us, who is your favourite upcoming  band/artist you hope others check out.
We like a few, but at the minute it has to be Charlie Floyd. He's been doing bits at the minute, he's written some proper catchy tunes. My favourite of his isn't even released, not even sure if he is releasing it because it was with his old band, but he's got this tune called 'Lucy', which is mega. It has a kind of vibe that we have in our music. It sounds a bit like a 90s indie thing but slightly 60s. It reminds me a little bit of 'She's Electric' by Oasis. I think every time I see him I tell him I wish I wrote Lucy, certainly almost every time I have a drink. But he's a proper gent, top tunes too. What more could you want?
