What made you want to get into music.
Most members of the band either come from musical families or have been playing their instruments since they were young. Billy (singer) got into music in early 2021 as he and Arthur (keys, guitar) put their heads together to set some of his poems to music. Over the years this project has gained five musicians and morphed into Birdlands.
What are your plans for 2026
We are planning to release some new music and hopefully get a few gigs in there too. Being at uni makes it quite difficult doing both of those things, we’ve recorded a new album’s worth of songs in the summer at a lovely studio just outside York so the plan is to get those out at some point.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Probably our debut album release show at The Crescent in York. We played a 45 minute set with no breaks between the songs, trying to make an immersive show. It was a big challenge but a lot of fun to do!
Who are your inspirations music wise.
For the album we have released we listened to a lot of Yard Act, Sprain, Daft Punk and Fontaines DC. For the new stuff we have been working on it’s more eclectic, we all have pretty different music taste which is nice so there’s a bunch of inspirations in there from jazz and funk to pop kinda stuff so the aim was to utilise all of that on the new songs which we like to think we’ve done a half decent job at.
Tell us, who is your favourite upcoming band/artist you hope others check out?
I think one’s for us are Victory Samosa and Flat Moon. Victory Samosa have the best band name in the world, but are also amazing! We’ve played with them a bunch in York and they’re such lovely people too, they don’t have anything out at the moment but if you get the chance to see them definitely do! Another is Flat Moon, who’ve recently released their debut album, physical copies and download only but it’s incredible. We’ve played with them quite a few times as well. They’re going on tour soon too after their amazing release show at The Brudenell in Leeds so catch them if you’re able to.
