1. What made you want to get into music?
“Music has always been there! I can’t remember a time before it. As a band it just felt like the right thing. There’s no other art quite like it. Being able to go out with your friends and perform songs you’ve written together is a great feeling. We don’t play now as often as we used to but even if months have passed it all comes back as soon as we’re on stage.”
2. What are your plans for the rest of the year?
“We have a lot of recordings to finish. There’s an album’s worth of songs, which I feel are probably the best we’ve written so far, sitting on a hard drive at home. I think they’re mostly complete bar some vocals which I’ve always struggled with. Because of the way we write — music first and then vocals — I’m usually left with a challenge writing vocal parts which will work. Sometimes that challenge leads to interesting things which wouldn’t have happened otherwise, which is why I like the restraints of doing it this way. But it takes a lot of mental effort on my part which I suppose I’ve been struggling to face.”
3. What has been the highlight of your career so far?
“It’s the little things which are really the best highlights. Sometimes seeing someone with one of our shirts on or a Shallow sticker on their guitar. Or when someone requests an obscure song which makes you feel like they really have listened to us. On occasion people do sing lyrics back which is the best feeling!”
4. Who are your inspirations music-wise?
“Our inspirations vary between us, but obviously 90’s Seattle sound is a big one. Also the intensity of The Prodigy’s live show. And anything dark and industrial! I suppose some nu metal as well. I always loved Wes Borland’s guitar tone.”
5. Tell us — who is your favourite upcoming band/artist you hope others check out?
“There’s so, so many good bands around at the moment! Marginal Gains are fantastic — I always try to tell everybody about them. The Hollows! Social Youth Cult. Too many to name.”
