We sat down with Bayou to discuss their plans for 2025 and how they got into music, and this is what they said...
Can you introduce the band and tell us how you got started? Jack fronts the band. Dan and Jake set the tone with Bass and Drums. We let Will do whatever they want, they refer to themself as the “melody-maker” but honestly that’s pretentious.HOW WE GOT STARTED! Friends of friends discover one of us has a project they’ve been wanting to bring into the world, the friends of friends help make it a reality. The friends of friends become the best of friends. The now-best-of-friends start jamming acoustically at a nearby river. It works, we like it, the rest is history.
What have been some highlights/ favourite moments you have shared as a band? A stand out moment for us would be our first out of town gig. We travelled to Colchester, one of Dan’s many hometowns. Band friends Sean and Amber put us up at their place and we played the coolest little dive bar, the sort of gritty operation that exclusively provides the best vibes.
How do you feel each band member brings their own uniqueness/individual influences to the music you make together? Jack and Will are the only members that really deserve to be in this band, their music taste is quintessentially “Bayou” folk rock, indie-country, midwest emo influences. But a band with the exact same music tastes as one another are the foundations of a bad band, so to balance it out we’ve got hip-hop and funk loving Dan and metalhead Jake, although he claims “there’s subcultures”.
Who are your inspirations music-wise? As a collective we have such varying music tastes. But Bayou itself is inspired by the likes of Pinegrove, The Strokes, Car Seat Headrest, Pavement, Twin Peaks, Beabadoobee, Blossoms and the storytelling factors of Johnny Cash.
What does your songwriting process usually look like? Our songwriting process has been something we’ve tried and tested in many formations. However, the best formula is the one where Jack writes something in his living room on an acoustic guitar and brings it to the rehearsal room where we make it “Bayou”. That way, we’ve got 3 fresh sets of ears on the track, ready to add their own flair. Our individual ways of playing and writing are very different, but when they come together it slaps.
Do you have any exciting plans in the works like new music, upcoming shows, or anything else fans should look out for? We’ve got a highly anticipated (highly anticipated by our mums) debut single releasing April 1st called “Coma Aroma” it’s a self-certified fustercluck of raw BVs and acoustic styling. Our next show is with Orchards on 30th April at Voodoo Daddy’s in Norwich. The good readers should also check out our TikTok. We still don’t really know how to use it but Jack and Dan are hot and appear frequently.
