Blu Eyes is an up-and-coming American singer/songwriter, making music around the melodic pop/folk genre. However, she has yet to “blow up” on TikTok or other social media platforms; despite promoting her music heavily on these platforms. This has not stopped her from releasing her first EP “Healing Hurts” on November 11, 2022. The six song album listeners on a journey through the later stages of a breakup in the first three songs; with tracks like “you’d never know” and “wish we never happened” highlighting the regretful stage. She follows those tracks with “my body hates me” which is both a track about body insecurity as well as an overall aging body. This flows perfectly into the next track, “rest in peace”, a ballad about getting older. She then ends the album with “healing hurts”, touching on a non-linear healing process from an ambigous trauma.
Overall, “healing hurts” is a solid starting EP release. There is a variety of topics covered in the songs and Blu Eyes uses simple lyrics to keep her music relatable to her audience. The first song off the EP, “you never know” is advertised as a mix between The 1975 and Taylor Swift on Blu Eyes’ TikTok account. While I understand this comparison was made to gain views and traction, I think the song reminds of Lizzy McAlpine; another pop singer-songwriter whose song, “celings”, blew up on TikTok as well. Overall, the song is a great start to the EP, giving a fresh song to the listeners about a later stage of a breakup, detailing someone not knowing what you’re going through. However, it can also be interpreted in a general way, as hiding what you’re going through from everyone around you; which is extremely relatable to many people. Another, heavily advertised song from the EP is “my body hates me.” This song is a new twist on songs about body image. Blu Eyes takes the listeners on a journey through viewing her body as a separate person and having a difficult relationship with them. She also discusses the difficulties of an aging and overworked body along with overall body insecurities in the song. This makes “my body hates me” a refreshing and relatable view on body image with an appealing title. However, one concern I have about the EP is the lack of variety in the music. Blu Eyes has yet to go viral on TikTok or other social medias for her music; with none of her songs becoming a “trend” for example. With this EP, there is not a song that stands out musically that listeners from all genres could stumble upon. There is potential with her song “healing hurts” to go viral due to its message about healing not being linear, but that would rely on the lyrics alone.
Overall, “healing hurts” by Blu Eyes is a solid debut EP release. It’s simple lyrics and the appealing song titles make the music extremely relatable for its listeners. This also gives songs like “healing hurts” and “my body hates me” to go viral on social media as that is Blu Eyes’ main form of promoting her music. However, with her ballad pop/folk sound, there is not much uniqueness to the musicality of the EP; which will prevent these songs from hitting that “viral trend” status that she would like to achieve. Therefore, I give this album a solid 7/10 rating.
